Discover the New Look of Hamilton Art Gallery in Cape Town
While our Bloom exhibition has officially come to a close, we here at Hamilton Gallery have been hard at work to create a fresh new display for the start of the holiday season! Many of the sections of display within our space change and shift constantly as we sell artworks, receive new artworks, and rotate the display to keep things fresh, but our main display wall is where we work our hardest to curate a stunning exhibition of larger artworks to really wow our visitors.
Working with some of our favourite and longtime artists, this wall features new and old works to the space. On first entering the gallery, you’ll see a very large mixed media painting, The Field by Greta McMahon, that fills the space with its vibrant red, orange, and yellow hues. The layers of colour and texture on the surface are mesmerising enough to lose yourself in if you’re not careful.
A smaller painting with just as much visual impact is Jeremiah Van der Want’s Burnveld. This work depicts a beautifully rendered bread palm tree in a dramatic and moody landscape. Dark browns and ochre hues make up the scorched earth of the landscape and the hardy leaves of the tree, rays of light filtering through the smoky air around it. This painting is a deep and dramatic work that would bring a great sense of gravitas to any space.
Cuttings 1 and Cuttings 2 by artist Juli Jana are a pair of landscape paintings, made with her usual flair of a variety of mediums. These two pieces hang side by side and tell the story of how the artist painted the sprawling hills and valleys of the Overberg region, “cutting” them into a field of colour and texture. There is a brightness and a transparency to the painted shapes of the landscape, enhancing the airy movement of the eye flowing over the curves of the composition.
Finally, one of the smaller works on the wall is a painting titled Waiting, by artist and owner of the gallery Katherine Hamilton. This acrylic painting on canvas, framed in matching grey, show an interesting scene of brightly lit pink and red familiar school chairs standing disordered on a green background. Just as the title prompts us to believe, a lingering feeling of waiting is present within the work. Already a beautiful artwork, this piece is sure to be a conversation starter in any space it finds its home.
