PIERRE BOTHA
Pierre Botha’s strongest memories of school are not of other kids but of being busy with tinned cans with powder paints ( Dala ). He felt it was like magic dust in the tin cans with exciting colours. From a young age he had his own little studio at home. Pierre’s uncle was a SAA pilot and brought paintings from France and Italy.
As a young artist, there were many influential works hanging in his home and he loved to copy them.
The artist’s family had a farm near Graaff Reinet ( On the Plains of Camdeboo ) As a kid he roamed alone in those mountains and plains and felt very connected. During breaks in his medical studies, Pierre worked as a steward on trains between Cape Town, PE and East London.
He was and still is an avid reader of Penguin Pelican books, mostly non-fiction.
Botha’s interests include Painting, literature, music ( Classical, Jazz etc). Although a medical student, he gravitated more towards the arts, and the artists’ world.
Traveling through SA he worked as a GP in Barrydale, and then explored the Plains of Camdeboo, roaming the mountains visiting farmworkers in their shacks.
While based there, Pierre observed the sights of the Karoo, Camdeboo: its animals; flora; landscapes and shifting skies.
He remembers the Earth: dry and brown and then wet and green in the changing seasons … The aroma of wild herbs after fresh rain. He dreamed of Fantasy Karoo landscapes and habitats ( like his signature painting ” Just around the corner “)
Throughout this time, he continued to paint portraits, still life and flowers etc.
Pierre studied for one year at the Open Window Art Academy, and attended a painting holiday with Dale Eliott in Knysna.
Past exhibitions include:
- Gencor RAU , Johannesburg artists in the medical field, Guest artist Walter Battiss Gallery , Somerset East ( bought The old Mill house.)
- Grahamstown Art festival exibitions
- Group Exibition with Heidi Kuhne Boekooi and her husband sculpter artist Frans Boekooi. In PE
Botha has worked for thee last 17 years at Fort England psychiatric Hospital. Mostly in maximum security and substance units before retiring.
He is now based in Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape with his wife, Erica. Botha spends his time, painting, playing guitar, reading and enoying the landscapes he uses as inspiration. He paints prolifically without losing his ability to capture the spirit and magic of the people, places and scenes that surround him.
