Max Goldin Spring Collection
As the crisp mornings of Spring ‘bloom’ and make way for warmer days, we reflect on a memorable exhibition that brought life and colour to our gallery walls. We thank those who joined us for this exhibition to celebrate the Spring season and our contributing artists for offering their own interpretations of ‘Bloom’ at the exhibition. We are slowly taking the show down and hanging our new display, which promises to be as colourful and visually stimulating as our ‘Bloom’ exhibition proved to be.
The feature piece of our Spring exhibition is a mixed media painting by artist Max Goldin titled ‘Bloom’. In direct view as one walked into the gallery, this original large-scale artwork – now sold – drew visitors into the gallery with its vibrant strokes of colour and patterns reminiscent of the first florals of spring. With its celebration of new beginnings and the intricate beauty of nature, it is no surprise that this piece quickly became a highlight, setting the tone for the entire showcase.
Max Goldin, now living in The Netherlands, is a South African artist working in a variety of media, being both skilled in illustration; painting and various printmaking techniques. Max is currently mastering his skills in tufting as an art-making process. His themes are playful, with imaginative depth and mystery. Max incorporates rhyme and storytelling into his art-making with an original, thoughtful approach.
One of Max’s key influences is his grandmother – artist Alice Goldin. Her influence is evident in his work, where he effortlessly blends storytelling with visual poetry, creating scenes that are thought-provoking yet light-hearted.
Alice Goldin, born in Vienna, became a prominent artist in South Africa after moving here in 1948. She became known for her skilled printmaking in woodblock and screen-printing. Her works on display in Hamilton Gallery feature beautiful scenes of Cape Town mountains, parks and forests. An avid nature lover, she had an affinity for the colours and textures of the scenes around her and captured them in her multi-layered prints on paper.
While Alice Goldin’s prints transport one back to the era during which she was a central figure in the local art scene, Max’s painted mural on a Sea Point promenade wall points to the art of current times. This contemporary mural painting is a testament to his emergence as a popular, up and coming artist in his own right .
Max’s painting, ‘Bloom’ brings to life the essence of Spring: renewal, growth, and vibrancy. as do his other artworks: newly printed works on paper will soon be available in the gallery and we now have his unique and quirky tufted artworks available.
