Basic Tips for Hanging and Storing Art
Sharing some basic tips for hanging and storing art as we do at Hamilton Gallery
Ensuring your valuable art is safe, secure and out of harms warm is a lot easier said that done often. Hopefully we can assist with some of these tips we’ve put into practice over the years at our Gallery.
Storage
- For works on paper, store them flat with acid-free tissue paper on top to protect the work.
- If storing rolled, flatten the image by placing clean, dry weights on all four corners or have it professionally flattened by a framer before framing.
- When wrapping artworks with bubble wrap, ensure the bubble side faces outward to prevent indentation marks on the artwork.
- Avoid leaving artworks wrapped in bubble wrap for extended periods.
- Avoid storing art in cardboard boxes or packaging for too long to prevent damage from wood-boring insects, dampness, or mold.
Hanging
- Hang artwork away from direct harsh sunlight. If exposure is unavoidable, consider framing with museum-grade reflection-resistant glass or plexiglass which can be sourced from most reputable framing companies.
- Avoid touching the front of prints or photographs with fingertips to prevent oil marks and damage to the paper’s acid-free quality.
- Use acid-free tape and mount board when securing paper to a mount board or frame.
- If hanging stretched canvas in a potentially damp environment, place thin slices of cork on the back of the frame to allow airflow between the artwork and the wall.
- In high humidity areas, works on paper may buckle. Consult a framer for the best methods to reduce this effect, considering factors such as climatic conditions, paper quality, thickness, and framing techniques.
Hopefully this information will assist you in ensuring you art is stored safely and hung out of harms way, In our next update, we will look at general maintenance and additional hanging methods and techniques to ensure your art is not only on the wall, but that it also stays on the wall.
