Stillness and motion Exhibition - Tuesday 13 May
Hamilton Gallery will be showcasing a mini exhibition of photographs ( Katherine Hamilton) , with the theme ‘Stillness and Motion‘. These will be small to medium scale photographs (30cm x 30 cm ) on textured archival fine art paper, unframed, to allow for affordability and ease of travel.
Observations
On various local trips and whilst travelling abroad , Katherine has observed figures and natural phenomena in their various states- ranging from the very still to the mobile.
“I enjoy attempting to capture the mood that the representation of these states evokes.”
Interpretation
Some of the photographs are abstract with merely a hint of what the original subject is in reality, while others are more literal and provide a clear reference to the subject photographed.
Katherine alters the original scene while taking the photo by using various shutter speeds and often creating ‘blurred’ effects by moving the camera or shifting the lens while the shutter is open. In this series of images, she has deviated from her usual ‘darkroom standard’ technique of minimal editing to a more experimental phase of slightly more photo editing.
“I do this to try to create an added element of mystery, mood or dynamism to an image – so that I can convey a sense of the surreal, sublime or nostalgic undercurrents that I feel when I encounter the scene I am photographing.”
Connection
She hopes that the viewer will be in some way impacted by the images – either visually , or emotionally.
There is stillness within the motion shots Katherine has taken, and vice versa – a vibrance and energy within the still shots.
