CLAUDIA GURWITZ
A first look at Claudis’s paintings show an almost photo-real representation of plant forms. Once inspected more closely, a tension is revealed, in the form and the controlled quality of the meticulously detailed brushwork. The image seems to vibrate and almost ‘levitate’ from the canvas. Her paintings are vibrant, energetic and alive. Going one step further than pure hyper-realism, they have an added intensity and life force. Claudia says of her work: ” My Painting is about forms and structure, about balance, harmony and tension”.
Claudia was born in Cape Town. She studied ceramics, mosaic and printmaking before attending Michaelis at UCT to study towards a BAFA in 1996. After two years, Claudia chose to pursue a career in Yoga instruction which led her to a 9 year long journey in the healing arts. It was after this that she returned to her love of art, specifically painting. She then completed a 3 year mentorship under the guidance of Julia Teale at Spencer Street Art studios .
In 2007, Claudia moved to Riebeek Kasteel, where she continued to teach Yoga, run her own yoga studio, and focus on painting. She lived and worked there for 13 years, participating annually in the Solo Studios event alongside many talented fellow artists.
In 2019 Claudia returned to Cape Town, where she now lives and works full time on her art. She is currently preparing for an exhibition of larger scale paintings at the AVA gallery in Cape Town, opening on the 2nd June 2021.
