SARAH BALLAM

In Sarah Ballam’s recent works, colour is startling. These paintings are dynamic, even confrontational in their boldness of technique and subject matter.

Ballam replaces local colour (the colour things are meant to be) with saturated colour that challenges conventional expectations of colour and shape.

Our attention is held by the tension between the forms and their dissolution, between structured composition and dissipation.

Ballam references celebratory images of women by great Modernist Painters. She reworks subjects painted by major artists of the (predominantly male) Modernist Era. Ballam’s paintings can be seen as a homage to these themes, as well as – perhaps – a challenge.
