BELINDA ORMOND
I matriculated in 1988 and went to study at the University of Pretoria where I received a BLuris degree. My interest in clay began in 1993 when I took ceramic classes up as a hobby at Three Anchor Bay Studio. While at this studio, I partook in various joint exhibitions: 1995 “Vessels” Cape Town Gallery, 1996 “Facing Animals” Feathers Gallery, animal busts, 1997 “Unity in Diversity”, The Castle, Mandela bust and Candlebearers, 1998 “Spring Vessels” Feathers Gallery, vase with indigenous flowers tiles.
Then in 2000 I established my own studio for teaching handwork & sculpture following the birth of my first daughter. I continued to participate in joint exhibitions organised by Ceramics Southern Africa including: 2003 “Vessels” Bellville Arts Centre, faceted bottles, 2003 “Altech Ceramics Triennial – Artscape”, “Four Seasons”, four clay twigs each representing a season, in a clay bottle, 2004 “Multiples” Bellville Arts Centre,
“Aloe Variety”, 8 clay bottles each with an aloe leaf extending, 2004 “Association of Potters Southern Africa, national exhib.- National Museum Pretoria” “Spring”, three spring twigs in clay bottles, 2005 “APSA, regional exhib. – Artscape” “Making Eve”, sitting figure,2006 “Ceramics Southern Africa – Artscape” “Standing Waves”, bottles with extended waves, 2007 “Ceramics Southern Africa – Artscape” “Recycled” & “Life” handpainted slipcast bottles. 2016 Ceramics SA “Smoke Towers”, 2017 Ceramics SA
“Paper Scroll”, 2018 “Balancing Act”.
Having done only hand building in ceramics up until this point, I decided, in 2007, to enrol at the Paarl College as a part time student in wheelwork and completed a year under Ralph Johnson.
I have exhibited at the annual exhibition of artists at Steenbokfontein, Lamberts Bay 2007-2014 and I have continued to generate works which I sell at various galleries and shops; Artvark, The Potters Shop, Africa Nova, Albie Bailey Gallery, Okha, Fringe Arts as well as online at southafricanartists.com .
Awards include: 2003 – Premier award, Altech Ceramics Triennial for “Four Seasons”, 2004 – Merit award Ceramics SA for “Aloes”
Collections: “Four Seasons” – Corobrik Collection
In 2010 I decided to sculpt a body of work which typipied my ceramic expression and would be the content for a solo exhibition. In 2018 I had my first solo exhibition. Details of this are under title of “Shape Town”.
